Senior Medical Technologist with Emerging & Re-emerging Infections under the Infectious Diseases Division (Internal#74/2026)

Project objective at a glance
The National Nipah Surveillance under the Infectious Diseases Division of icddr,b aims to strengthen hospital-based surveillance, early detection, laboratory confirmation, outbreak investigation, and public health response for Nipah virus infection in Bangladesh. The project supports timely identification of suspected Nipah cases, collection and transportation of biological samples, maintenance of biosafety and infection prevention practices, and generation of high-quality surveillance data to support national preparedness and response.
Position Description:
The Senior Medical Technologist reporting to the Research Investigator under the National Nipah Surveillance will be mainly responsible for following duties and responsibilities:
- Collect biological samples from suspected Nipah cases, enrolled patients, close contacts, same-source exposed individuals, and other study participants as required by the surveillance protocol.
- Maintain appropriate biosafety and infection prevention measures before, during, and after sample collection and processing.
- Process biological specimens, including aliquoting, serum/plasma separation, sample decontamination, packaging, and preparation for laboratory testing.
- Maintain cold chain during sample collection, temporary storage, transportation, and transfer to designated laboratories.
- Store samples according to approved SOPs, study protocols, and laboratory quality management guidelines.
- Prepare logistics and sample collection materials for hospital surveillance teams, field teams, and outbreak investigation teams.
- Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, consumables, PPE, reagents, sample collection materials, and transport logistics.
- Support laboratory testing-related activities as per approved protocol and supervisor’s instruction.
- Prepare reagents, disinfectants, and laboratory materials in accordance with approved SOPs.
- Operate and maintain relevant laboratory equipment, including centrifuge, biosafety cabinet, refrigerator, freezer, micropipette, sample transport box, and other surveillance-related equipment.
- Ensure regular cleaning, disinfection, calibration support, and maintenance documentation of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure compliance with institutional guidelines, Good Clinical Laboratory Practice, biosafety procedures, infection prevention and control practices, and study-specific SOPs.
Required qualifications and experience:
- Diploma in Medical Technology (Lab)/ Health Technology;
- At least 5 years’ relevant working experience in clinical laboratory work, biological sample collection, sample processing, sample storage, sample transportation, or infectious disease surveillance/research activities.
- Experience in hospital-based surveillance, Nipah virus surveillance, outbreak investigation, or public health laboratory activities will be an added advantage.
- Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and electronic data/sample inventory systems, will be preferred.

Contract Type and duration:
- Fixed Term; duration will be 1 year with a possibility of extension subject to availability of fund and performance.
Salary & benefits:
- Annual Salary of Tk. 7,92,480/-inclusive of house rent, conveyance allowances and other admissible benefits, including provident fund contribution, income tax paid by icddr,b, children's allowance, festival bonus, contributory healthcare support, group life insurance, and subsidized canteen. Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
