Study Physician with Emerging & Re-emerging Infections under the Infectious Diseases Division (Internal#98/2026)
icddr,b is a Bangladesh-based international health research institute that strives to solve key public health problems through high-quality scientific research and innovation.
The Programme for Emerging & Re-emerging Infections at icddr,b is implementing a project, aiming to identify the causes of death for children under age five and stillbirths in Faridpur district. The project is collaborating with the Government to arrange different data to action activities and support stakeholders for the available data.
Position Description:
The Study Physician will report to the Research Investigator and will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct hospital-based surveillance, including regular follow-up of enrolled cases and monitoring outcomes;
- Ensure timely identification and notification of deaths from partner hospitals and the community;
- Obtain informed consent from families for minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS), in accordance with ethical and cultural guidelines;
- Perform (MITS) following approved study protocols and biosafety standards;
- Share findings for cause-of-death and study results with families in a sensitive, ethical, and culturally appropriate manner;
- Coordinate hospital support for the mothers whose children are enrolled in the study.
- Conduct regular orientations and refresher sessions for surveillance hospital staffs to strengthen collaboration and surveillance quality;
- Prepare weekly activity reports and submit them to the supervisor in a timely manner;
- Provide input to prepare monthly and periodic technical and progress reports;
- Participate in data analysis in collaboration with investigators and data teams;
- Provide input to develop abstracts, reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications;
- Participate in conducting and monitoring planned data-to-action interventions;
- Identify emerging gaps, trends, and actionable insights from day-to-day surveillance activities;
- Propose initiatives for new data-to-action aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes;
- Collaborate with colleagues and supervisors to adapt protocols based on evolving research needs and field observations;
- Address queries and data correction requests from other components of the study;
- Supervise and support Field Assistants and other junior staff to ensure adherence to protocols and quality standards;
- Train newly recruited team members on consent procedures, biological sample collection, result sharing, and field ethics.
Required experience and qualifications:
- MBBS degree from a Medical College recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council;
- Minimum 3 years of experience in the field of child and maternal health;
- Candidates with experience in hospital-based surveillance and working with bereaved families will get preference.

Contract Type and Duration:
Contractual Services Agreement basis (CSA); duration will be 6 months with a possibility of extension, subject to availability of funds and performance.
Salary & benefits:
- Tk.96,120/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances;
- Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen, transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
