The Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) Laboratory under the Infectious Diseases Division (IDD) conducts clinical, epidemiological, immunological, genomic, and laboratory-based translational research to advance the understanding of infectious diseases and generate evidence to strengthen their prevention and control, particularly in low-resource settings.
Position Description:
The Research Officer will report to the Principal Investigator (PI) and will be responsible for planning, organizing and implementing all activities related to the research project(s) to ensure high-quality research by following standard operational practice and icddr,b organizational values and guidelines. The specific areas of responsibility include:
- Perform laboratory tests and experiments in accordance with the protocols of the affiliated research projects, including preparing SOPs for sample collection and processing before the commencement of project activities;
- Prepare sampling plans in consultation with the Principal Investigator (PI), study coordinators, and train field workers on sample collection procedures, sample processing, isolation of PBMC/WBC from whole blood, antimicrobial susceptibility testing of isolates, DNA/RNA extraction from biological specimens, execute genome-based analysis, expertise in detection of genes of interest using PCR and qPCR database preparation, and data analysis;
- Immunophenotype T-cell and B-cell subsets using flow cytometry;
- Perform molecular detection, identification, and quantification of the pathogen by ELISA, PCR (both conventional and real-time), and perform immuno-multiplex assay (Luminex) to measure the cytokines from human cell culture supernatant.
- Perform in-house maintenance and calibration of complex laboratory equipment like PCR machines, ELISA readers, centrifuge machines, etc.,
- Perform advanced biostatistical analysis, prepare preliminary reports, and submit them to the Coordinator/Assistant Scientist/Senior Scientist;
- Preserve and manage research data to ensure complete, accurate, and accessible information for future reference and analysis;
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
- Train junior staff on laboratory techniques and biosafety practices;
- Provide input to the Principal Investigator (PI) on research proposal and protocol development;
- Generate innovative research ideas to support new funding opportunities;
- Draft concept notes in collaboration with colleagues and Principal Investigators (PIs); and
- Provide the Institutional Review Board (IRB) with the required information and documentation to support PIs in fundraising and project planning.
Required qualifications and experiences:
- Master's in Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Microbiology with a good academic record.
- At least 3 years of Lab research experience in the relevant field.
- Preference will be given to candidates with publication in an international peer-reviewed journal.
Contract Type and Duration:
- Short-Term; duration will be 06 months with a possibility of extension, subject to availability of funds and performance.
Salary & Benefits:
- Tk.66,040/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances; Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen. Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
