The Genome Centre at icddr,b is a cutting-edge facility specializing in genomic research, pathogen surveillance, clinical and public health research. Using advanced sequencing technologies, the centre supports infectious disease surveillance, AMR research, outbreak response, and genomic capacity building. Importantly, the Genome Centre has expanded into cancer next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing to support personalized treatment for cancer patients by identifying clinically relevant mutations that can guide precision oncology decisions.
Position Description:
The Research Fellow will report to the Associate Scientist and will perform laboratory research, prepare research concepts and protocols, plan, organize, and implement research activities, and also write manuscripts to conduct high-quality lab research at the Genome Centre within the guidelines of the research protocol and organizational values. The specific areas of responsibility include:
- Perform microbial and fungal culture, isolation, and preservation using aseptic techniques;
- Extract DNA/RNA from microbial, fungal, clinical, and environmental samples for molecular and genomic applications;
- Conduct DNA/RNA quality control, including concentration, purity, and integrity assessment;
- Maintain records of collected samples, culture collections, DNA/RNA inventories, laboratory databases, labelling, storage, and traceability;
- Prepare laboratory reports, QC summaries, project updates, and relevant scientific and administrative documentation;
- Administer project activities including sample tracking, work planning, reagent monitoring, procurement follow-up, and project records;
- Maintain compliance with laboratory SOPs, biosafety, QA/QC, data security, and waste disposal requirements;
- Train and supervise students, interns, and junior staff in laboratory techniques, documentation, and biosafety;
- Perform laboratory troubleshooting and workflow optimization, and provide inputs to meetings, presentations, manuscripts, and project reports.
Required qualifications and experience:
- Master's with B.Sc. in Microbiology/Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/ Genetic Engineering with an excellent academic record (at least CGPA 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale in both Bachelor's and Master's degrees) and completion of a thesis in a relevant field;
- 1 year of relevant laboratory experience;
- Hands-on experience in microbial and/or fungal culture, DNA/RNA extraction, nucleic acid quality control, laboratory documentation, and research project coordination will be given preference.

Contract Type and Duration:
- Fellowship agreement; duration will be 1 year, with a possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds and performance.
Stipend & Facilities:
- Stipend: Tk.59,140/- per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances. Income tax paid by icddr,b, including subsidised canteen and transport (subject to space availability).
