Research Officer with Emerging and Re-emerging Infections under the Infectious Diseases Division (Adv#139/2026)

Programme for Emerging and Re-emerging Infections under Infectious Diseases Division is conducting research project  aims to investigate the ecological, epidemiological, and zoonotic pathways associated with henipavirus emergence through an integrated One Health approach. The project will incorporate animal and wildlife surveillance, ecological assessment, characterization of human–animal interfaces, pathogen detection, and identification of factors associated with potential spillover.

Position Description::

The Research Officer reporting to Research Investigator will be mainly responsible for following duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop research ideas, concepts, protocols, and analytical plans;
  • Collect and manage GPS and UAV/drone imagery related to  bat roost, bat behavior, ecological, and environmental data;
  • Clean, verify, and prepare GIS, UAV, and camera-trap datasets for analysis;
  • Map identified bat roosts and sap-harvesting trees, maintaining updated spatial records of colony size, roost stability, and site characteristics;
  • Process and analyze UAV optical, thermal, and multispectral imagery collected within a 5–7 km radius of monitored roosts, in coordination with drone operators;
  • Process and analyze motion-sensor camera imagery from the bat monitoring system;
  • Generate landscape and habitat layers, including vegetation structure, fruiting-tree distribution, land use, and proximity to settlements and sap-harvesting sites;
  • Link spatial data with specimen, site, reservoir, laboratory, environmental, and citizen-science datasets using consistent identifiers;
  • Maintain the centralized spatial surveillance database in accordance with icddr,b data governance, variable naming, coordinate, and site-coding standards;
  • Produce maps and spatial summaries for internal reviews, reporting, and scientific outputs;
  • Analyze GIS and drone data to identify spatio-temporal patterns and geospatial covariates of Nipah virus spillover risk, perform any other required analysis to meet the study objectives;
  • Develop spatio-temporal regression models to estimate and predict Nipah virus spillover risk using GPS, ecological, bat behavior, and environmental data;
  • Participate in field visits to support roost/tree mapping and UAV survey activities;
  • Prepare study reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.

Required qualification and experience:

  • Master’s degree in Remote Sensing & GIS/ Geography/ Environmental Science/ Disaster Management/urban and regional planning;
  • At least 3 years of experience in relevant field; 
  • Experience of working with GIS software e.g., QGIS or ArcGIS and spatial data formats;
  • Experience of processing drone-derived data is highly desirable;
  • Familiarity with GPS data collection tools and field-based spatial data capture;
  • Data management skills using Excel, R, or Python for spatial data handling is preferable..

Location: Dhaka.

Number of Positions: 01

Contract Type and Duration:

  • Short-Term; duration will be 11 months with a possibility of extension, subject to availability of funds and performance.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Tk.66,040/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances; Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen. Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
